How do LNG storage tanks work?
LNG storage tanks have double containers, where the inner contains LNG and the outer container contains insulation materials. In LNG storage the pressure and temperature within the tank will continue to rise. LNG is a cryogen, and is kept in its liquid state at very low temperatures.
How tall is a LNG tank?
Tank dimensions are typically in the order of 80-90m in diameter and 50m in height with a wall thickness in the order of 750mm (refer Figure 1). The post-tensioning tendons are very large and can run in both the vertical and horizontal directions.

Why are LNG tanks round?
These cargo containments can either be spherical (Moss sphere design) or geometric membrane (membrane design) and each containment are made in multi-layers. These layers of tanks make them leak-proof and help in maintaining the necessary colder temperature inside.
How is LNG kept liquid?
LNG is kept in its liquid form via autorefrigeration. This is a process in which the fuel is kept at its boiling point. Through autorefrigeration any additions of heat are offset by the energy lost from the LNG vapor, vented out of the storage and used to power the tanker.

How are LNG tanks insulated?
The sidewalls of LNG containment tanks are usually insulated with a combination of loose-fill perlite and fiber glass blankets. The tank roof typically has a floating component insulated with closed cell foam. The tank base is usually insulated with multiple layers of high-density cellular glass.
How long LNG can be stored?
The time the tank can hold the LNG without venting is called “holding time”. By codes in US and Canada the holding time is 5 days.

Liquid gas can be 600 times denser than it was after extraction. The process of creating LNG is more expensive, so the price of LNG is higher than CNG, but it is a great opportunity to transport natural gas over long distances effectively.
